“I believe that you are never too old to undertake study and upskill. I am Lisa, Student Support Officer with York Lumen Study Hub. I am passionate about education and ensuring that everyone, especially rural and remote students, have the opportunity to continue their educational journey.

In 2016, as a single mother of eight, I decided I wanted more out of life and applied to Murdoch University to pursue a Bachelor of Arts. I was thrilled to be accepted into my chosen course. Shortly after starting, I decided to add a second major to my degree. The journey was far from easy, managing my ADHD, juggling my family and studies and traveling from York to Murdoch two to three times a week were significant challenges throughout my studies. There were many moments when I nearly gave up, especially when my degree became obsolete, forcing me to reconfigure everything.

After six challenging years, I proudly graduated in February 2023 with a Bachelor of Creative Media and a Bachelor of Communication. It was an incredibly proud moment for me. I surprised myself, I found a strength and determination that I did not know I had. I believe I showed my children that you can achieve your dreams if you put your mind to it.

Looking back, I believe my studies would have been less of a struggle if the Lumen Study Hub had been available back then. I could have studied more online, knowing that I had a supportive study environment available, a space away from the demands of housework and chores that led to procrastination.

Now, I’m working full-time and have returned to studies to pursue my Master of Community Development, studying online. The support and resources available through the Lumen Study Hub are invaluable in helping me balance work, life, and education. If you’re considering returning to study as a mature-age student, remember that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams, and with determination, planning, and the right support, you can successfully balance education with the demands of work and family life.”

Lumen is fortunate to have such an incredible woman on our team! Thank you, Lisa, for sharing your educational journey with us and inspiring others during Adult Learners’ Week.
